Sleep apnea treatment
Sleep apnea is an obstruction of breathing during sleep. It is characterised by a partial or complete blockage of the upper airway, which inhibits breathing and fragments sleep patterns. Both children and adults can be affected.
Symptoms include snoring, morning headaches, fatigue, excessive daytime sleepiness, behavioural problems and impairment of cognitive ability (learning, thinking, memory) and attentiveness.
In children, fragmented sleep adversely affects growth and development, general health status, mood and overall performance. Snoring is a common sign of sleep apnea and it should rarely occur in children. If snoring persists long-term, the cause of the problem should be investigated.
At Eastern Suburbs Orthodontics we are concerned about the detrimental impact that sleep apnea has on the quality of life of children and adults. We use a multidisciplinary team, if necessary, to provide support and management of this issue.
